The restaurant Il Pozzo, situated right in the heart of the Castello of Monteriggione, in the middle of the Piazza Roma has been welcoming guests for more than 40 years.
Vittorio, the owner and manager looks forward to giving you the opportunity to taste the delicious food and selection of wines, as well as enjoy the high quality standard in a privileged setting. Indeed, you can either choose to sit in the pretty garden, in a calm and private atmosphere, or sit inside the typical rustic Tuscan style room, with its chalk walls and stone arches. During long summer nights, there is also the wonderful possibility of sitting directly near the piazza, a few selected tables under a vines porch, and thus you will be able to see all the numerous festivals that Monteriggione hosts in the summer.
Everything about the Pozzo, points to a history of excellence and attention to detail and local cuisine specialities: it is our own chefs who prepare the delicacies: hand made pasta, tortellini and desserts are all freshly made everyday, the meat comes directly from farms in Valdelsa area; thus offering a typical Tuscan cuisine, but with the additional attention to consciously prepared and carefully elaborated dishes, which will be served with a rigorous selection of wines from our cellar.
Indeed, the wine cellar, along with local wines, offers the famous Chianti Classico DOGG, the Supertuscans, and Brunello di Montalcino. An old secret passageway was discovered inside the cellar of the restaurant that leads directly towards the outside the castle walls of Monteriggioni: Just like the dishes offered, the choice of the name of the restaurant was not taken on vain: indeed, the name does just evoke the well that is present on the piazza, but is an homage to Monteriggione itself and to the great Poet Dante who wrote in the Divine Comedy, in the canto of Inverno XXXI: “.. Monteriggioni di torri si corona, – così la proda che ‘l pozzo circonda – torreggiavan di mezzo la persona … “, comparing Monteriggioni to a well looked after by giants.
Therefore, if there is restaurant to try in Monteriggioni, it is the Pozzo!
